Creative Industries Academy
The following design philosophy has been embedded in the Creative Industries Academy ensuring it is a deeply evocative proposal hightening its functionality and usability with empathy and character.
- Designing for transparency to generate highly stimulating environments which create deeper connections between people, activity and place.
- Designing for indeterminate interaction between creative outlets, providing a sense of freedom of expression and an inclusive sense of belonging.
Situated in close proximity to the Royal Brisbane Hospital, educational facilities and Brisbane’s CBD, the site has potential to attract a broad spectrum of user groups into the proposed precinct. The development incorporates two public plazas, a marketplace, library, sporting complex and a cinema. Each of these buildings have been planned cohesively with careful consideration to the in-between spaces in order to optimise the overall functionality of the site.
This building provides an appropriate response to the current urban scale whilst considering inevitable further development around the site. The design imposes minimal impact on the land, its native ecosystems and microclimate whilst ensuring coherence with the surrounding urban scale.
Creative Industries Academy accommodates formal and informal activities such as music, dance rehearsal and performance. Where high level of activation occurs, such as in the circulation areas of the mezzanine levels, there is opportunity for informal meetings, collaboration, studios and rehearsal spaces. This provides students to freely express their creative outlet in a transparent, supportive and flexible environment.
The building envelope has been designed to provide opportunity for indeterminate interaction encouraging movement between spaces. Tiered seating and platforms wrap around the base of the main staircase and cantilever supporting columns. This provides place for rest, plugging in to rehearsals, watching or participating in performances enhancing the designs inclusive feel.
The experience of the performer and onlooker has been highly considered in the spatial qualities whilst also responding to the subtropical climate. Layered roofs, shading and louver systems optimising the useable area during harsh conditions maximises the buildings usability and desirability. Natural light and ventilation have been prioritised enhancing the connection to the outside where appropriate.
