Wetlands Education Centre
This is a catalyst project that aspires to spark change within the community, bringing in ecotourism and educating others to do the same whilst restoring biodiversity.
This design intervention in Charleville will reflect ecological and biological realities imperative to future generations of all life forms and act as a catalyst for worldwide ecological enlightenment. Complex issues of societal systems (physical, social, economic, cultural and aesthetic) require a thorough understanding and approach on a local, regional and global scale to strengthen community resilience. Implementing a biophilic design approach to adapt and create extensions to communities such as Charleville will foster ecological healing and restoration aimed at protecting the longevity of the community. Fundamental to this intervention is sensitivity to the whole system which respects anthropocentric well-being, biodiversity and the built and natural environment. The design response will incorporate elements of science and technology to support these facets of the biosphere and enhance the overall impact on society for future generations.
Essential to the success of this intervention and its momentous impact on a broader scale is promoting awareness and education of the issues that influence community resilience. The proposed design will have a significant experiential and educational focus on sustainable living practices including aquaponics and permaculture creating a greater appreciation for natural processes and ethical food production whilst reconnecting people to the land. A few major elements crucial to educating people within the landscape is to ensure natural light, ventilation and a visual connection is provided along with interactive, interpretive signage. These design considerations enhance user stimulation and participation as well as providing psychological health benefits.
Enrich biodiversity and general wellbeing of the landscape and its ecosystem. Habitat and vegetation considerations. Enhance user experience and add educational value to attract more people whilst teaching them about being compassionate and respectful towards nature. This is achieved through the regeneration of the river walk, revitalising the gully, mitigating floods and activating edges.
Provide cabins for people to prolong their wilderness experience and deepen their education and connection to the landscape and wildlife.
